Union squanders win against Westerlo after late penalty

Union started the game against Westerlo without Burgess and Castro-Montes. They were allowed a rest.

And resting a bit is something the 11 Unionists on the pitch also did. After a poor pass back from Sykes, Vermant headed it towards Moris. The ball ended up with Van den Keybus, who scored the 0-1 after only five minutes.

But Union fought back with some chances through Amoura and Nilsson, among others. After Westerlo lost the ball, Puertas found Lapoussin. He set up a one-two with Rasmussen and finished coolly. 1-1!

Amoura then had another chance and finished on the crossbar.

1-1 was thus the halftime score. After the break, an identical pattern of play. Union pressing and creating chances. On the hour mark, Machida threw the ball in front of goal, Nilsson extended to Lapoussin and he made his second of the evening for the 2-1.

Union then had to finish the match and had the chances to do so, but each time a Westerlo leg was there to prevent them from doing so.

Westerlo hardly showed anything anymore. In added time, the visitors got a questionable penalty kick from VAR and Madsen made it 2-2.

Nilsson could have made it 3-2 moments after the visitor's penalty, but his effort was kept out of the goal by an ultimate intervention.

Thus, at 2-2, it remained an unfortunate points loss. On to Thursday and the Conference League match against Frankfurt. Tickets are still available on ticketing.rusg.brussels.
