Union beats Cercle in ice-cold Duden Park
Amoura and Nilsson gave Union the three points with a 2-1 win, although it was still tense and shaky for a long time until the end.
On the pitch, there was barely a trace of solid layer of snow that had fallen about three hours before the match. Thanks to the work of our stewards and volunteers, the snow disappeared as quickly as Amoura steamed onto Warleson just before the half-hour mark. The result: Union opens the mark.
Although that lead was flattered, as Cercle pressed us well at times in its well-known style. There were no big chances before the opening goal. But after that Amoura goal things went quite fast.
As Amoura dived into space again, crossed the ball to Lapoussin who only needed one touch to shoot, which was then turned into a goal by Nilsson like a proper striker. 2-0. Cercle responded almost immediately, as even before half-time, Denkey fired in his tenth goal of the season (2-1).
Ex-player Senne Lynen came to say goodbye to his audience.
After half-time, more chances, but fewer goals. Puertas aimed fiercely against the crossbar. Moris had to neutralise a distance shot and Denkey missed a great opportunity at the far post.
The substitute Rodriguez could have finished it off, but he missed in front of goalkeeper Warleson.
So it remained 2-1 and three points added to Union's tally. On to next Thursday, when we play for the Round of 16 of the Belgian Cup in and against Beveren. Get your tickets by contacting the fan clubs!
