Victory against Cercle and in second place for the last matchday

Union won 1-2 against Cercle in Bruges and are three points behind Club Brugge, who won against Anderlecht later in the evening. Only if Club Brugge lose the derby against Cercle Brugge on Sunday, and if the Unionists win against Genk, we can become champions.

It was a tough fight on Sunday afternoon against Cercle Brugge. Union had to win to still have a chance in winning the Belgian league, and did just that.

Cercle did start strongly with its familiar style of play and plenty of pressure forward. Moris went well flat on a threatening shot, we did not create any big chances ourselves. Until out of nowhere Amoura cleverly turned away and Nilsson cleverly dived towards the first post, 0-1.

The score was not on the board for long, as Felipe Augusto popped in the equaliser under Moris. After a difficult display from both teams at the end of the first half, a break was more than welcome.

Union then had 10 strong minutes to decide the match. An attack through Castro-Montes, Nilsson, Amoura, Puertas and again Alessio made it 1-2. Goal number four from ACM this season.

1-2 win and Union thus settles into second position three points clear of Club Brugge, who are in pole position for the title. But it's ‘unpredictable’ surely?

Sunday after the match, we will honour our players at the stadium for the cup win and the fantastic season. See you on Sunday at The Marien!
