Union wins first supercup in its history

2024 is the year when Union became both cup and Supercup winners. The day before the national holiday, we defeated Club Brugge 1-2 at the Jan Breydelstadion.

Union's season opener took place in Bruges. Coach Pocognoli was leading his first match and immediately secured a trophy. Kabangu and Eckert Ayensa formed the forward duo. There were few chances to note, a shot from former Union player Nielsen was well saved by Moris.

Just before half-time, the most important moment of the first half occurred. Kabangu was sent through by Puertas and brought down in the box, the referee awarded a penalty and the VAR took about 4 minutes to thoroughly review it. The confirmation finally came, and Puertas was a bit lucky when his penalty slipped under goalkeeper Mignolet and into the net.

After the break, Union scored again immediately. Once again, Puertas was at the origin with his characteristic free kick that Mignolet deflected into the path of Fedde Leysen, 0-2 for Union.

Brugge pressed hard, but Moris stood firm. Until the Greek Tzolis managed to beat our goalkeeper (1-2). A final offensive by the hosts did not materialize, Lazare and Kabangu actually should have sealed the match earlier, and thus the 1-2 score remained on the board.

Union played the Supercup for the first time in its history and immediately won the title.

See you on Saturday in Dender!
