Union take a point on the road at Charleroi
Union picked up a point on the road at Charleroi. Our Unionists took a deserved lead in the 40th minute and held firm for a long time. In the second half, the home side pushed forward, but in the very final moments, a VAR intervention ensured we returned home with a point.
The match started in an intense fashion, with plenty of duels in midfield. We quickly took the initiative and created the first chances. Leysen launched David with a long throw-in. The Canadian flicked the ball on to Schoofs, who found space and drove towards goal, but his effort was intercepted by goalkeeper Koné.
After a foul by Charleroi, Union were awarded a free kick in a promising position. Schoofs immediately switched play towards Van de Perre. In the follow-up, we appealed for handball, but after a VAR review, no penalty was awarded.
Charleroi then threatened for the first time, but Scherpen kept us in the game with an alert intervention. Shortly after, the home side put together another attack, without creating any real danger.
Following a spell of end-to-end football, the opening goal eventually went our way. Rodriguez stayed alert and laid the ball off to Mac Allister, who immediately slipped David through. Our striker made no mistake and fired powerfully into the near corner: 0–1.
Just before the break, we remained dangerous. Another long throw found Schoofs, who played David in. He turned well but saw his shot go just wide. Moments later, Schoofs tried his luck himself after winning the ball back, but his effort flashed past the post.
After the restart, Charleroi took more initiative, but we stayed well organised. From a corner, the ball fell to Titraoui, whose attempt flew over the bar. A few minutes later, Scherpen was called into action again with a fine save from a powerful Scheidler shot.
Going forward, we continued to wait patiently for our moments. From a long throw-in, Khalaili managed to get a header away, but it lacked accuracy. Shortly afterwards, David created another good opportunity after showing great determination, but his effort went wide.
In the second half, Charleroi drew level through Colassin from a free kick: 1–1.
Late on, Union kept pushing for a winning goal. From a free kick taken by Rasmussen, Burgess rose to head the ball, but could not find the target.
In stoppage time, Charleroi were awarded one final set piece. The ball was headed into the net, but following a VAR review, the goal was ruled out for offside.
We therefore take a point from an intense away match.
