Union kick off the Hubert era with a win over Charleroi
Union won its first match under David Hubert. In a game full of duels, our Unionists managed to make the most of their chances. Charleroi put up some resistance in the first half, but in the second half Union took control. The match ended 3-1.
From the outset, Union were forced to sit deep and look for counter-attacks. Charleroi began on the front foot, dominating possession. They first threatened with a long-range strike and nearly capitalised on a misplaced pass from Leysen, but Mac Allister made a crucial block.
In the 5th minute, Union hit back on the counter. Florucz was played through on goal but his effort was deflected. Shortly after, the Unionists earned a free kick. Rasmussen whipped it low into the box and, after a rehearsed move and a clever flick, the ball struck the side netting.
Union did break the deadlock in the 15th minute. From a throw-in, Burgess slipped the ball to Florucz, and the Austrian striker made no mistake, finishing clinically with his left foot: 1-0.
Charleroi continued to pose a threat, forcing Scherpen into a save after a defensive lapse. Just past the half-hour mark, Florucz once again burst through but was denied after a last-ditch block.
On the stroke of half-time, Charleroi levelled. A long throw was inadvertently flicked on by Leysen into the path of Ousou, who pounced and fired home: 1-1.
Straight after the restart, Union struck again. Patris sparked the attack, the ball found Florucz on the right, and his cross was smashed in by Niang: 2-1.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser, battling hard in midfield, but failed to create clear chances.
In the 70th minute, Union extended their lead. Niang tried to cut inside from the left but laid it back to Rasmussen, who unleashed a superb strike from outside the box to make it 3-1.
Charleroi had one more dangerous moment late on, but the scoreline stayed the same. A perfect start, as David Hubert celebrates his first win in charge of Union.
