First away win of the JPL season in Ghent
Union secured a well-deserved three points at the Planet Group Arena. David Promise opened the scoring before halftime, with Sykes and Ait El Hadj extending the lead to 1-3 after the break.
In the first half, the turning point was Gandelman’s disallowed goal due to a handball. At the other end, Ivanovic forced Gerkens into losing possession. Tobi broke away towards goal and made it 0-1.
After the break, Union took control of the game. Vanhoutte delivered a perfect corner kick onto the head of Sykes (0-2). Sadiki then set up Ait El Hadj for a stunning strike into the top corner, making it 0-3!
Gudjohnsen pulled one back to 1-3, but before and after that, Union had plenty of chances to score. Castro-Montes hit the post, Ivanovic was denied by Roef, and Rodriguez shot wide in the closing stages.
Nevertheless, Union claimed their first away win in the Jupiler Pro League and climbed to 5th place in the standings. See you in 2025 for the Belgian Cup quarterfinal against Antwerp!
