Determined Union hands Genk their first home defeat
We kick off the Champions’ Play-offs with a perfect 12 out of 12. Promise David scored both goals in our 1-2 victory.
Coach Pocognoli started with Vanhoutte (his first start since returning from injury), Sadiki and Van de Perre in midfield. Union struggled to get a grip on the game in the opening 15 minutes, but we didn’t concede any chances.
The balance of the match was restored around the half-hour mark. Clear-cut chances were rare, with only Machida needing to step in with a crucial double intervention.
Right before half-time came a decisive moment. After a clever move by Ivanovic, Sadiki beautifully backheeled the ball to David, whose shot went just wide but he was taken out by a sliding tackle from El Ouahdi. Penalty for Union – and ‘Tobi’ kept his cool. 0-1.
Union came flying out of the dressing room, immediately creating a big chance for Khalaili. Not long after, Niang slipped David through on goal, and once again he calmly finished past Penders. 0-2 for the Unionistes.
Union held off Genk and could’ve even scored a third, but David fired wide in a one-on-one with the Genk goalkeeper.
In the dying minutes, our substitute goalkeeper committed an unsporting act by throwing a ball onto the pitch. As a club, we apologise for this behaviour. More info here.
In any case, Union heads to Bruges with a strong 12 out of 12! Fans who still want to join the away trip can purchase their match and bus tickets via ticketing.rusg.brussels.
