Union unable to retain the Supercup
After winning the league title last season, Union once again faced cup winner Club Brugge in the Supercup. The runners-up were seeking revenge after losing the championship. Ivanović gave Union the lead after fifteen minutes, but half an hour in, Club Brugge equalised from the penalty spot. In stoppage time of the first half, Club took the lead from a corner: 1–2.
Christian Burgess led Union as the new captain from kickoff. It was goalkeeper Vic Chambaere’s first official appearance for the team. The match started well for Union. The Brussels attack immediately put the Bruges defence under pressure. After Rodriguez won a header, the ball landed at Ivanović’s feet. He broke through alone on Mignolet and slotted the ball into the left corner: 1–0.
After that, Club Brugge took control of the match. On the half-hour mark, captain Burgess committed a rash challenge on Tzolis inside the box, and the referee awarded a penalty. Tzolis converted it himself: 1–1. Just before halftime, Vanaken put Club ahead again from a corner, assisted by Tzolis: 1–2.
In the second half, Union tried to claw their way back. The Brussels side took the initiative and increased the pressure. On the hour mark, Charles Vanhoutte had a golden chance to equalise but fired wide. The Union players created a few more attacking opportunities, but were too careless with their finishing. Summer recruits Raul Florucz and Adem Zorgane made their official debut for Union in the second half.
In their final push, they couldn't find the equaliser. Club Brugge held onto their lead, and the match ended 1–2. Next Friday, Union will kick off their regular league campaign against Antwerp.
