Union remains unbeaten after trip to Bruges
It was tough evening at the Jan Breydelstadion, as expected, but Union did get a 1-1 draw against Club Brugge. We go into the new year as leaders and maintain a 14-point lead over our opponent of the day. Union's goal was scored by Gustaf Nilsson.
The start was for Club Brugge, who put Union under good pressure. However, Moris did not have to intervene as Thiago decided wide from close range. In minute 27, we forced our first real chance. Amoura picked up the ball after an aerial duel with De Cuyper, he then painted the ball onto the head of Nilsson, who buffeted in. Mignolet had no recourse, 0-1.
The game intensified a little more as, after a good counter-attack, Burgess foiled Thiago's effort with a clever slide. Celebrating towards the Club supporters gave the Jan Breydel another reason to turn up the heat in the stands.

Before half-time, Moris then had to dive for a crucial save for the first time, he retrieved a nice placed ball from De Cuyper from under the crossbar. Union in front 0-1 at the break.
The hosts also started the second half well. After a phase in the box, VAR gave a penalty kick for handball by Lazare. Thiago popped in for the 1-1. From then on, the match was slowed down by fouls on both sides (Union committed 14 fouls, Club 15). Burgess finally escaped a second yellow card when he tried to stop Vetlesen in midfield.
So there were hardly any chances, although Amoura came close and Puertas also popped one on Mignolet. Deep into added time, Union pressed too high up the field and Jutgla dived into the open space of Union's defence, Moris had come out and pulled at the Bruges striker's shirt. It resulted into a red card for our captain and as a result Puertas went in goal as the substitutes were used up.
Despite that fairly unique scene, it remained 1-1. We end the first part of the season in fantastic manner, with 48 points and on top of the league. Thanks for the unconditional and positive support. On to 2024! Allez l'Union !
