Union misses chance for a golden point in Madrid

Patris’s headed chance in the final moments of Atlético - Union will linger for a while. The 2-2 was within reach, but we ultimately went down 3-1 in Madrid. Still, our Unionists once again showed what we stand for, even at the highest level.

The first half was dominated by… Union. Atlético were outplayed tactically, and Union created chances — Rodriguez fired wide.

But as it often goes at this level: just minutes before halftime, Niang lost the ball, Simeone launched a lightning-fast counter, and Alvarez finished it off for 1-0.

After the break, the home side stepped up a gear. Union held on. David shot wide from close range — and once again, at the other end, the ball went in. 2-0, Gallagher.

Union didn’t give up. Substitute Boufal delivered a perfect cross onto Sykes’ head for 1-2. Then came what should have been Patris’s moment. But no 2-2. Instead, 1-3 via Llorente on the other side.

We leave the Metropolitano with our heads held high, and now we look ahead to Istanbul!
