Union lift the Super Cup after dramatic penalty shootout

Union began the new season with silverware, defeating league champions Club Brugge in Bruges. After a 1-1 draw, the cup winners prevailed in the penalty shootout.

New arrival Olaru was handed a place in the starting XI for Union's first competitive match of the season, and the visitors made an excellent start. In the opening ten minutes, the attacking duo of Fuseini and Raul twice caused problems for the Brugge defence. Fuseini fired narrowly wide before Raul struck the post from Fuseini's cross after the Ghanaian had been released by Van de Perre.

The game then settled into a more even contest. Chambaere produced an excellent save to deny Club Brugge, while a corner from the home side also came back off the crossbar. The teams went into the break with the score still 0-0.

Club Brugge struck immediately after half-time. Union failed to clear the ball at the back, allowing it to fall to Tresoldi, who volleyed home to make it 1-0. Union then spent a long spell under heavy pressure and struggled to play their way out of Brugge's press.

The momentum shifted after 70 minutes. Union finally found openings in the home defence. Van de Perre picked out Fuseini, whose effort was well saved by Sommer. It proved to be a warning. Six minutes later, Mac Allister surged forward and released Fuseini, who unselfishly squared the ball back to the advancing defender. Mac Allister made no mistake from close range to level the score at 1-1.

That remained the final score, sending the match straight to penalties. Union converted all five spot-kicks through David, Khalaili, Zeneli, Zorgane and, finally, Mofokeng. Chambaere also saved Club Brugge's fourth penalty to seal Union's Super Cup triumph.
