Union launches SAFER: a safe stadium for all supporters
Royale Union Saint-Gilloise is taking the lead in Belgium with an innovative project to make the Joseph Marien Stadium safer and more inclusive for everyone, with female supporters in particular. With concrete actions, the club aims to respond to past incidents and set a new standard for the future of football safety. Union is looking for volunteers to be part of our Care Teams during matches. You can apply via the form in this article.
With ‘SAFER’, Union is introducing three pillars to make stadium attendance safer for women.
- Mobile Care Teams will be used to respond more quickly to incidents. Stewards will refer to these specially trained teams.
- The Supporters' Liaison Officer (SLO) also plays a key role in this project. Creating awareness of his function and regular dialogue with supporters will strengthen the bond between club and fans. Both in our own stadium and in our away box.
- In addition, fans are encouraged to report undesirable behaviour via an improved reporting system. This system, complete with a helpline, ensures quick and visible follow-up on reports.
Union has a large group of women among its fans and we are proud of that. And they too need to be safe at all times in our stadium and on the move in our away box. This initiative proves that safety at the stadium is more than a promise, it is a priority.
