Union Hold Spanish Cup Winners Real Sociedad to a Draw

A late equaliser from academy graduate Seikou Keita earned Union a thoroughly deserved point.

Union started the match strongly and created the most dangerous chances before half-time. Sylla glanced a header off the post from a free-kick. Later, Mofokeng appeared at the near post to meet a cross from Patris, but his effort was blocked at the last moment. Otherwise, the two sides cancelled each other out before the break.

The second half got off to a frustrating start for the home side. A misunderstanding between Van de Perre and Koffi led to the opening goal, putting Real Sociedad 1-0 ahead. However, Union continued where they had left off before the break and kept creating chances. The equaliser had been coming throughout the second half, but it finally arrived from a free-kick in the penultimate minute. The ball was flicked on by a Real Sociedad player and, at the far post, substitute Keita, a product of Union’s own academy, slid in to make it 1-1.
