Union are Cup finalists and heading back to the Heysel

The Union family can once again prepare for a trip to the Heysel after eliminating Charleroi in the semi-finals of the Belgian cup. The first goal of the match came after just 12 seconds. But the equaliser quickly followed. In the end, our Unionists made the difference and secured an emphatic 4-1 victory. We now prepare for our second Cup final in three years.

The match started as explosively as the fireworks whose smoke had barely cleared. After just 12 seconds, Promise David found the back of the net to open the scoring: 1-0. But the visitors from Charleroi were clearly not impressed. After three minutes of play, the Zebras also found the net. Aurélien Scheidler immediately levelled the score: 1-1.

The first half remained intense. Chances came at both ends and the supporters at the Duden Park were treated to an entertaining encounter. Our Unionists created several more opportunities. Some efforts went over the bar, Delavallée had to make several saves, and the crossbar also stood in the way of the 2-1. We went into the break with the score at 1-1.

The second half began with another chance for our Unionists. David shook off the Charleroi defence and was set up by Fuseini, but Delavallée produced an excellent save. Two minutes later, in the 50th minute, it counted. Mohammed Fuseini scored his first goal of the season after a long injury spell, finishing a pass from Promise David to make it 2-1.

Later in the second half, our Unionists had another huge opportunity, again through Promise David. But once more Delavallée came up with a superb save. A few minutes later, another massive chance followed. This time it wasn’t the goalkeeper but the crossbar that denied the goal. In the 72nd minute, Yacine Titraoui received a second yellow card. Charleroi had to continue with ten men for the final twenty minutes.

In the 83rd minute, something happened that felt familiar. Just like in the 2024 semi-final, Ross Sykes headed the ball into the net: 3-1 for our Unionists. Duden Park knew it was done — Union were heading back to the Heysel. The relief was complete when substitute Florucz, assisted by Zorgane, added the fourth goal: 4-1.

Fireworks lit up the sky around Duden Park as the final whistle sounded. For the second time in three years, Union will play in the Belgian Cup final. The final will take place on May 14 at the King Baudouin Stadium. Practical information will follow via Union’s official channels.
