Strong Union held to 2-2 draw against Bruges

If it hadn't been for Simon Mignolet, Union would have taken all three points. The Club Brugge goalkeeper kept his team in the game during a dramatic final phase that could have ended 3-2. Union had taken a 2-0 lead but let it slip too easily, resulting in a 2-2 draw at the Duden Park.

Union played their best football in the first half. We gave nothing away and created threats, including a massive chance for Ivanovic, who was denied by a phenomenal reflex save from Mignolet.

It looked like we’d head into halftime at 0-0 until Ivanovic made a brilliant run, stormed down the field, and smashed the ball into the net for 1-0.

After the break, Brugge made some tactical changes, which seemed to pay off briefly, but David Promise showed great determination and forced an own goal after Mignolet’s initial save. 2-0.

Perhaps it came just a bit too early in the match, as Union conceded a goal from Talbi, making it 2-1. Nilsson then equalized to 2-2 from a free kick.

Union regained momentum, and a header in the dying moments of the match was first saved fantastically on the line by Mignolet and then cleared by Vanaken. No 3-2, but a draw. Next stop: Gent for the final match of 2024 on Boxing Day!
