Schoofs gives Union late victory against Racing Genk

Union secured a crucial away victory against Racing Genk thanks to a late strike from substitute Schoofs: 1-2. After their European triumph against PSV Eindhoven, Union showed their resilience in domestic competition. The Unionists took the lead through David, but saw Ito level after the break. In the closing minutes, Rob Schoofs ultimately delivered the three points for Union.

Union struck with their very first chance. Rodriguez flicked on a long clearance from Union's penalty area to David. The Canadian striker cleverly turned away from defender Smets and found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Lawal. David kept his composure and slotted the ball into the right corner: 0-1.

Racing Genk then became dangerous twice from set pieces. The first time, Scherpen managed to clear the ball off the line, then David dealt with the next attacking move in combination with Scherpen.

The home side started the second half furiously and immediately put Union under pressure. In the 55th minute, the equaliser became reality: Streukers was allowed to run freely in the Brussels defence and served Ito, who fired the ball into the net: 1-1.

Union momentarily lost control after several Genk attacks. Scherpen managed with some luck to keep the ball out with his thigh, but with half an hour to play, Union got another chance. Florucz was through on goal alone, but was caught offside.

With twenty minutes still to play, attempts came from both sides of the pitch. First, Scherpen had to tip the ball out of the top corner with a strong reflex, then Niang tried his luck but without result.

Racing Genk seemed on course for victory in the 78th minute when Oh slotted the ball home from under Scherpen's hand. VAR had to intervene and disallowed the goal.

In the absolute final minute, Union struck ruthlessly. Mac Allister sent a long ball towards Florucz, who flicked it on to Schoofs. The substitute midfielder didn't hesitate for a second and fired the ball home with his left foot: 1-2. Everyone on the Brussels bench leapt up in relief and stormed onto the pitch.
