Ivanović sends Union into delirium in the dying seconds
Finally, a victory—and what a way to do it! Union deservedly won against Nice on Matchday 6 of the League Phase of the Europa League. But we had to wait until added time for an excellent assist from Ait El Hadj to Franjo Ivanović. The Croatian striker scored twice, securing the 2-1 win.
It all began with a scrappy opening quarter and an almost catastrophic mistake by Moris on a back pass from Vanhoutte. Union also had two huge chances: first, Fuseini went one-on-one with the goalkeeper but missed. Boufal then tested Bulka’s reflexes.
The Polish goalkeeper kept his team alive with a spectacular save on another big chance from Boufal. The Moroccan playmaker was in his element, orchestrating Nice’s game on a challenging, almost literal, battlefield.
Still, out of nowhere, Nice equalized to make it 1-1 just before halftime. Machida lost possession, and Guessand capitalized.
In the second half, Union created the better chances, but two attempts were cleared off the line, and substitute Rodriguez was denied once again by Bulka.
Then came the 93rd minute. Ait El Hadj received the ball from Sadiki, cut inside, and found Ivanović, who brilliantly slotted it home!
