Guilherme saves a point for Union against Standard
Union earned a point at Sclessin thanks to substitute Guilherme. The Union side went behind in the first half after a goal from Ayensa, but Guilherme levelled the score in the 76th minute: 1–1.
After three minutes, Union already seemed to have taken the lead. Ait El Hadj slipped the ball through to Fuseini, who finished neatly. Referee Visser, however, disallowed the goal because David had touched a Standard defender earlier in the move. The VAR confirmed the decision: 0–0.
Shortly afterwards, Union had another excellent chance. Van de Perre picked out Khalaili on the right, but he hit the ball too hard across goal, leaving David unable to get his effort on target.
The opening goal came at the other end. After fifteen minutes, Fossey made a run down the right flank and delivered a cross that found Ayensa, who controlled and finished perfectly into the far corner in one move: 1–0.
Union were briefly unsettled and Standard had a big chance to double their lead. Mohr advanced down the left and slipped the ball through Sykes’ legs, but Karamoko fired over the bar.
In the 37th minute, Patris missed a golden opportunity to equalise. Khalaili swung in a cross that deflected off a defender. Patris had a close-range header, but goalkeeper Pirard produced a strong save to deny the leveller.
After the break, coach Hubert made a substitution: Guilherme, who scored last week, replaced Patris. Union began the second half on the front foot. Ait El Hadj looked for an opening but found no passing option. He went for goal himself, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar.
Standard remained dangerous on the counter. Ayensa broke into the box and found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Chambaere, but the keeper reacted well off his line, leaving Ayensa with too tight an angle to score.
In the 76th minute, Guilherme brought relief. The substitute dribbled past two defenders on the left and unleashed a shot himself. The ball went through a defender’s legs and in off the post: 1–1.
Union pushed for more late on. Zorgane had a shot on goal, but it took a touch and lost its pace. The match ultimately ended in a draw.
