Five goals against OH Leuven and a 9 out of 9

With a strong performance in a sun-drenched Marienstadion, the Unionists brushed aside Leuven. The goals came through Terho, Puertas, Eckert (2) and Nilsson. We start the season with a 9 out of 9!

Union and Leuven kept each other in check in the opening stages. A first threat came through Vanhoutte. His kick was stopped by the opposing goalkeeper.

Minute 21. Casper Terho cut inside and pulled the trigger. The Finnish winger beat Cojocaru at the first post, 1-0 for Union.

Scorching Puertas

Three minutes later, Union came through once again, this time thanks to Cameron Puertas. Strong with the ball at his feet in the box, turning and scorching out for the 2-0.

Just before half-time, Leuven got one back, out of nowhere, through a beautiful goal by Thorsteinsson. The score is 2-1 and the players are heading to the dressing room. And Union came out of them with the intention of scoring a third.

Machida saw a goal disallowed, Eckert hit the crossbar and so it had to be via penalty kick. Puertas was lightly pushed in the box, Eckert scored 3-1.

A penalty saga

Another penalty was given, as Terho was hit in the box, and again Eckert got behind the ball. Now he sent Cojocaru to the other corner to make it 4-1 after 75 minutes.

The substitute François was found at the far post in the added time, when his cross towards Nilsson was also touched. The referee gave Union its third penalty of the evening.

Gustaf Nilsson got behind the ball and rattled in his first of the season. 5-1 and the Marien Stadium started dancing!
