First away win slips away in tumultuous end

For a long time we seemed to be heading for a 0-1 victory, but KV Mechelen deservedly equalised in the end (1-1). Although that happened in final minutes that were full of, unnecessary, turmoil.

The standout story of the match that we will talk about for a while played out in minute 92. Anthony Moris who, while lying on the ground in his own penalty area, got a plastic beer cup on his body.

Result: with the score 0-1, the referee halts the match. Both teams go in for five minutes, and on coming out this happens: corner kick KV Mechelen, header through at the first post, Touba scoring for the home side.

From bad to worse

It is again indicative of Union's start to the season. From bad to worse. The first pleasing away win was up for grabs, but was not pulled across the line.

However, our first half was quite good, with a deserved lead through David from a penalty spot after 20 minutes. Three goals in one week for the striker who is otherwise adjusting well to the Belgian league.

Beer cup

A league in which we are not doing well at the moment. Because in the second half, Mechelen was better, Union was pushed back, lost its cool, and KVM was simply more threatening with two big chances for Raman and finally also Lauberbach. Especially the latter missed incomprehensibly, but just at that stage Moris went down and the beer cup came, thrown by a Mechelen ‘fan’.

An unnecessary non-football story we prefer not to dwell on. 1-1 in Mechelen.

And one lucky thing: the next chance to recover presents itself on Thursday. At the Heysel against AS Roma. 15,000 tickets have already been sold, be there! Allez Saint-Gilles !
