David and Giger fire Union to victory over Westerlo

After a lacklustre first half, Union regrouped after the break and secured a 2-0 win over Westerlo. Promise David broke the deadlock from a corner, before substitute Giger sealed the victory minutes later.

Despite Union’s early attacking intent, it was Westerlo who created the first danger. Goalkeeper Scherpen had to intervene sharply to stop an initial effort, with Sykes then blocking the follow-up on the line.

The game evened out, but both sides were wasteful in front of goal. From a long throw by Mac Allister, Zorgane failed to deliver a proper cross, and moments later Niang flashed a ball across the box with no teammate able to capitalise.

The first half therefore ended with few chances, the numerous technical errors keeping the tempo of the match low.

Union came out of the dressing room with renewed energy and carved out their first chance in the 55th minute, again from a long throw by Mac Allister. The ball was flicked on to Florucz, but he couldn’t control and fired over.

In the 62nd minute the breakthrough finally came. Our Unionists were rewarded for their attacking efforts: from a corner, Sykes’ header was parried by the keeper, but Promise David reacted quickest to slot home the rebound for 1-0. That makes it already five goals this season for the Canadian striker.

Substitute Giger then wrapped up the result. Patris won an aerial duel, briefly lost the ball but immediately recovered and played a clever through ball to the Swiss forward. From a tight angle, Giger made no mistake and finished clinically for 2-0.
