Union's Cup journey ends in Antwerp
In the quarterfinals of the Croky Cup, Union suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat against Antwerp, eliminating them from the competition.
Under the snow at the Bosuil, Antwerp dominated the first half with the most possession, but our Unionists had a great chance to open the scoring. David sent Ivanovic through with a subtle pass, but a heavy touch allowed Antwerp goalkeeper Lammens to neutralize the danger.
Just before halftime, the inevitable happened: Antwerp took the lead through Chery, who finished off a quick counterattack. 1-0 at halftime.
Early in the second half, Chery doubled Antwerp's lead with a converted penalty after a foul by Sykes on Deman.
Union quickly responded with a magnificent goal from Sadiki, who shot from just outside the penalty area and struck the bar before the ball went in. 2-1.
However, after our goal, we were hit hard by a much stronger Antwerp, when Janssen scored to make it 3-1.
In the final stages, Antwerp further extended their lead with goals from Kerk and Praet, sealing the final score at 5-1.
This defeat ends a run of thirteen unbeaten matches for Union and concludes our Cup journey. Our Unionists will travel to Charleroi on Saturday evening, in search of victory! Allez l'Union!
