Westerlo – Union SG : 4-2
Our Unionists traveled to the Kuipje in Westerlo last Saturday evening. After a defeat last week against Standard (the first defeat since September in the Jupiler Pro League), Union wanted to avoid dropping points again. Unfortunately, The match did not pan out the way they wanted it to.
USG felt the pressure since the referee blew the first whistle. The boys from Westerlo attacked anything that moved and Union struggled to find any rhythm in the Kuipje. Then, the home side eventually scored first as Madsen served a good ball to Van den Keybus 15 minutes into the game and Union were trailing (1-0).
Captain Teuma nearly equalized with a clever free-kick, but Bolat sent the ball over the bar. Moments later, all the alarms went off again at the other end of the pitch. After good speed from Vaesen, the ball landed at the feet of Chadli to make it (2-0) despite Moris’ first save. A massive blow for our Unionists, but fortunately Boniface was able to mitigate the score shortly before half-time after a good combination between Teuma and Lazare. 2-1 was therefore the score at the break.
When the teams returned from the locker room, Union knew exactly how to react as we managed to equalize in the 67th minute (2-2). A deflected shot from Teuma landed in the back of the net through Boniface’s head. But this score did not last long. Twenty minutes before the end, Lazare fouled Van den Keybus in the penalty area, which was checked by the VAR. De Cuyper put Westerlo back in the lead (3-2). In the final moments of the game, things got even worse. After Teuma lost the ball, Nene placed the ball perfectly past Moris to cement the win (4-2).
Next Thursday we have a historic match coming up. We will face Antwerp at the Bosuil and defend our 1-0 first-leg win for a place in the Belgian Cup final.
Allez l’Union !
