Union SG – STVV : 2-1
The international break being over, our Unionists played at home against Saint-Trond last Sunday evening. Union haven’t beaten the Canaries at the Stade Marien since 1971 and manager Geraerts was eager to put an end to their run. Ross Sykes replaced Christian Burgess in the starting Eleven, who was serving his last day of suspension.
Both teams started the match at a brisk pace. In the 8th minute, Nieuwkoop fired up the Stade Marien when his shot seemed to go past the line but the STVV goalkeeper Schmidt appeared to clear our Dutchman’s attempt, but referee Visser and VAR didn’t intervene. Union continued to dominate the game with few opportunities. 0-0 at the break.
Upon returning from the locker room, Geraerts’ troops stepped up a gear and put the Saint-Trond defense in a lot of difficulties. But against the run of play, it was the visitors who opened up the scoring. Bruno dribbled past Van der Heyden and trumped Moris to make it 0-1. This was a sign for Karel Geraerts to change up the squad. Puertas and Vertessen entered the game to increase the pressure on STVV. Teuma then equalized with a deflected free-kick (73′) but it wasn’t until the 90th minute that delirium set in at Parc Duden. Lynen found Adingra and Adingra found Puertas who found the net perfectly. Victory for Union in the dying moments of the game!
Allez l’Union !
