Union SG – Standard de Liège : 2-4
It was time for Standard de Liège to visit the Joseph Marien Stadium last Saturday evening. Les Rouches really wanted to take the three points to pursue Club Brugge for a place in Play-Off 1 as Union wanted to close in on Genk.
Union attacked the game with the ball, but neither team managed to get inside the opponent’s 18-yard box, until the 20th minute, when Zinckernagel opened the scoring for Standard on their first real chance of the game (0-1). Union responded immediately with a goal from Yorbe Vertessen, his first for the club. He was perfectly set up by Loïc Lapoussin to put it past the goalkeeper. Unfortunately, our Unionists fell behind again following a magnificent play by Donnum for Alzate’s finish, (1-2) for the visitors. After those five minutes of madness, the game began to settle down again at Duden Park. Just before half-time, the Liégeois had a good chance as Zinckernagel found the post and Moris.
After the break, Karel Geraerts brought on Adingra and Union dominated possession again. In the 66th minute, Union equalized with ease as Boniface got on the end of a perfectly placed cross with his head (2-2). The Unionists then began to look for the winner, but with 5 minutes to go, Standard put one past Moris through a small defensive error that Balikwisha was able to take advantage of (2-3).
But it still wasn’t over and Union had a couple more chances to equalize, but it was Donnum and Standard who killed the game (2-4). Therefore, our unbeaten streak ends after 17 games.
Next week, our Unionists will travel to the Kuipje for a match against Westerlo on Saturday 25/02 (8:45 p.m.). Contact one of our fan clubs to obtain combi tickets (bus + match).
Allez l’Union !
