Despite the absence of our supporters, to whom we had the pleasure of hearing in Duden Park, Union still managed to thrill the Stade Marien with a dramatic ending to the match.
Genk began the game quite comfortably in the first half, however, they were unable to create any chances. Despite this, Union were the first to break the deadlock around the half-hour mark. Build-up play initiated by a Bart Nieuwkoop cross saw Casper Nielsen arrive at the edge of the box and…. Bam! 1-0!
Genk came out of the locker room with other intentions and eventually equalized with a penalty from the golden boot of Paul Onuachu. Despite some often sterile onslaughts from visitors, Union carried out a formidable last counter-attack. First with a goal from Deniz Undav, which was eventually called for offside…, then, Union drew on its reserves and they were able to force a penalty in the dying seconds.
Dante Vanzeir didn’t second question himself and smashed the winner into the back of the net before celebrating this unique moment with our Unionists! 2-1
Union will go to 2nd place Club Brugge on Thursday for a top of the table clash for gameday 24 of the Jupiler Pro League!
