Union SG – Antwerp FC : 2-0

Antwerp came to the Stade Joseph Marien for match day 20 for a top of the table battle. So far this season, Union lost 4-2 against Antwerp in their first meeting away from home, with an own goal and two red cards. Keeping the three points at home was therefore the main priority for our Unionists.

Union created the most danger in the first fifteen minutes with Vanzeir returning to the starting eleven. His shot was first blocked by Alderweireld, before making its way to Lazare as the ball drifted past the post. 5 minutes later, Sykes caused more problems with a header which narrowly missed the target. After the half-hour mark, Union’s work finally paid off. Boniface fell in the box as Teuma headed the ball towards Vanzeir who scored with a magnificent volley. 1-0 (35′).

Antwerp could not respond to the opener. Janssen had a chance before half-time, but it was whistled for offside.

The Unionists’ speed of play dropped after the break allowing the visitors to get back into the game. This did not result in much danger as the efficiency on the last pass was lacking on the Antwerp side. Union continued to threaten the Antwerpers on the counterattack. Nieuwkoop and Vanzeir almost made it 2-0. Sykes had two more chances to score with a header. Fifteen minutes before the end, Janssen touched the ball with his hand in the area and our captain Teddy Teuma doubled the score. 2-0 (76′). Final whistle and Union have won their third game in seven days.

The next fixture for our Unionists will take place at the Jan Breydel Stadium against Cercle Brugge on 19/01 at 6:30 p.m.
