No European football, but a visit from the Buffalos to Joseph Marien Stadium on Wednesday. Union Saint-Gilloise could remain level with Club Brugge, which would give added importance to Saturday’s fixture against the Bruggeois.
Lazare quickly gave the advantage to our Unionists as he teased the Ghent defenders before unleashing a hell of a strike from outside the box into the back of the net to make it 1-0 (12′). A perfect start to the match for Union as Gent couldn’t do much in return. A shot from Ghent striker Depoitre did not worry Moris and Vanzeir narrowly missed the target for a great opportunity to double the lead just before half-time.
In the second half, the Gantoise came back a little better, but just before the hour mark, Ngadeu stopped Vanzeir’s run as he was the last defender and received a direct red. Ghent had to continue with ten men for more than half an hour. As a result, they failed to create major chances in the second half and it was the Union who took advantage of it. Once again, Lazare was involved in this goal, but it was Vanzeir who capitalized on his cross and scored to clinch the game 2-0 (82′).
Union, therefore, confirms a solid run of form with 15/15 points and remains fourth with as many points as Club Brugge. Saturday’s direct duel against Club could determine the pro league’s standings for the near future.
Allez l’Union !
