There was still a lot on the line for USG last night as they entered their penultimate Europa League fixture. We were sure to get through the winter remaining in Europe but a win against the Swedes in Malmö would secure the team first place in the group.
Union started the game very effectively as the rain poured heavily over the Eleda Stadium. Although it was Spring temperatures in Scandinavia, the temperature went up a notch in the 10th minute as Lazare’s pass found Teuma to surprise goalkeeper Diawara to make it (0-1) for the away side. Malmö responded quickly and began to threaten Moris’ goal several times, but the Swedes didn’t prevail.
Just before half-time, Lazare killed the game with a precise shot from a Teuma assist (0-2). Union returned to the locker room two goals ahead and with almost the guarantee of reaching the last 16.
The pace died down in the second half as our unionists settled into the game. Vanzeir and Lapoussin both had opportunities to extend the lead but they were denied by Diawara. Malmö didn’t create many dangerous chances and Moris ensured that we kept a clean sheet.
Union Saint-Gilloise have secured 13 out of a possible 15 points so far and have gained a place in the last 16. A great evening as Union makes history!
Allez l’Union !
